Carroll, John

Carroll, John
(1735–1815)
   Archbishop and Missionary.
Carroll was born in Maryland in the American colonies, but was educated in France. Having joined the Jesuit Order, he was ordained in 1769. In 1774 he returned to America where he practised as a missionary and actively supported the movement for independence. He was an associate of Benjamin Franklin, and through Franklin’s influence he became Superior of Missions in 1784. Then in 1790 he was consecrated the first Roman Catholic Bishop in the United States. He insisted on the equal rights of Catholics with Protestants and was tireless in his attempts to consolidate the Roman Church in the new nation. He was appointed Archbishop of Baltimore in 1808, with four diocesan Bishops under his care. Carroll is remembered as an important figure in the history of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States.
